Kazakhstan denies closing border with Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK/ASTANA. Nov 30 (Interfax-AVN) - The Kazakh National Security Committee has denied a Bishkek claim stating that Kazakh authorities have unilaterally closed the border with Kyrgyzstan in the run-up to presidential elections, due to take place on December 4.

"Kazakh border guards at this section of the state border have been put on alert," the Kazakh National Security Committee press service told Interfax.

"There has been no closure of the border on the part of Kazakhstan," it said.

The press service declined to explain the reasons behind the tightening of border controls.

The Kyrgyz border guard department earlier told Interfax that "Kazakh authorities unilaterally closed the border on November 29 in connection with the upcoming presidential elections."
