Kyrgyzstan might increase rent for U.S. airbase - minister

BISHKEK. April 18 (Interfax-AVN) - Kyrgyzstan has prepared a justification for the increase in rent for the U.S. airbase, Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Alikbek Dzhekshenkulov told Interfax.

"The U.S. is currently studying Kyrgyzstan's reasons for increasing the rent for the coalition forces airbase deployed at the Manas airport," Dzhekshenkulov said.

The rent might be increased about 100-fold, he said.

"The U.S.'s readiness to accept these terms is on the agenda of talks with the U.S. government," he said.

"The U.S. has agreed to the reassessment of terms," he said. "However, U.S. authorities insist on an economic justification of the increase in the rent. We are prepared for a dialogue. We have a full package of documents to this account," he said.

"This year the state budget has so far received nothing for the airbase's deployment," he said.

The rent is shared between the Manas airport joint stock venture, the Kyrgyz Defense Ministry and local authorities for the rented land plot, he said.
