Faulty wire blamed in destruction of armored vehicle in Chechnya

MOSCOW. May 3 (Interfax-AVN) - An armored vehicle of an Interior Ministry Forces unit caught fire and blew up in Chechnya's Vedeno district. No one was hurt, the press center of the Regional Operations Headquarters in the North Caucasus told Interfax-Military News Agency by phone.

"A faulty electric cable caused a fire in a BMP-2 armored vehicle and a subsequent explosion of the ammunition. The incident occurred three kilometers from the village of Dyshne-Vedeno," a spokesman said.

"No one was hurt, but the armored vehicle was put out of action, and the cannon with 500 shells and a submachine gun with over 2,500 rounds of ammunition were destroyed," he said.

The incident is under criminal investigation, the spokesman said.
