NATO to help Moldova dispose of Soviet-era pesticides

CHISINAU. May 16 (Interfax-AVN) - Moldova, the NATO Secretariat and the NATO Maintenance and Supply Organization (NAMSO) have signed a number of agreements to dispose of stockpiles of pesticides and hazardous chemical substances inherited by Moldova from the former Soviet Union.

The effort will help avert an ecological catastrophe in the republic, a Moldovan Defense Ministry spokesman told Interfax-Military News Agency on Monday.

The project's 841,000-euro first phase envisions collecting more than 1,600 tonnes of pesticides at 358 specially equipped sites, the spokesman said.
