GUAM considering creating a peacekeeping force – Azeri minister

BAKU. May 31 (Interfax-AVN) - The defense ministers of the GUAM member-states are discussing the possibility of creating a peacekeeping force within the organization, Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev has said.

"Specialists from the GUAM countries have been considering this issue for a long time," Abiyev said at a news briefing in Baku on Wednesday.

Abiyev said he had discussed the issue at a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart in Baku on Tuesday.

"This issue is being considered, and we are working on it. When we come to a common conclusion, then, after a meeting between the GUAM defense ministers, we will send it to the heads of state for consideration," he said.

Abiyev did not rule out that such a peacekeeping force could be deployed in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone. "Everything is possible, and time will tell," he said.

GUAM comprises Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova.
