Six killed, over 14 wounded in attack in Chechnya

GROZNY. July 5 (Interfax-AVN) - Six servicemen were killed and 14 more sustained wounds of various degrees in an attack on a military convoy between Avtury and Serzhen-Yurt in Chechnya's Shali district on Tuesday, Chechen Prosecutor Valery Kuznetsov told Interfax from the scene.

"A military convoy ran into an ambush in the Shali district in the afternoon. Unidentified gunmen opened fire at the servicemen. Six people died of their wounds. Over ten servicemen received wounds of varying degrees," Kuznetsov said.

The Chechen prosecutor's office opened a criminal case into the attack in the Shali district, Kuznetsov said.

A special operation has been launched at the scene of the attack and the adjacent areas to hunt down the attackers, Kuznetsov said.

"It is too early to say now what group was responsible for these events," he said.

The federal forces and the Chechen law enforcement agencies have taken exhaustive measures to capture or kill the attackers, he said.

Sources from the Chechen Interior Ministry and the headquarters of the Combined Federal Forces in the North Caucasus earlier told Interfax that seven servicemen had been killed and 25 others wounded in the attack on a military convoy near Avtury at about 2:00 p.m. Tuesday.
