G8 supports return of Iran issue to UN Security Council

STRELNA (ST. PETERSBURG). July 17 (Interfax-AVN) - The G8 leaders support the return of the Iranian issue to the UN Security Council, according to a statement circulated on Monday from Russia, which currently holds the G8 presidency.

The statement says that considering the lack of Iran's readiness for an all-around discussion of proposals submitted to it on behalf of Germany, China, Russia, Britain, the United States and with the support of the EU High Representative and given the fact that Iran has not taken the steps required for a start to the talks, in particular did not suspend all efforts to enrich and handle uranium as stipulated in IAEA requirements, the G8 supported the decision of ministers of the six countries to return to the discussion of the Iranian issue to the UN Security Council.

Iran is facing a serious choice and the G8 has called upon it to make the right decision - to positively respond to the concrete proposals submitted to it on June 6, 2006, the statement says.
