Force will be needed to implement UN resolution on Lebanon – Chirac (Part 2)

STRELNA (St. Petersburg). July 17 (Interfax) - Force will have to be used to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1559 on Lebanon, French President Jacques Chirac told a Monday press conference in Strelna.

"Force will be required to carry out resolution 1559," Chirac said in response to a question about what measures, besides diplomacy, may be needed to disarm the Hezbollah.

Talking about the possible objectives of a peacekeeping contingent, Chirac said those would be to "very quickly make sure that the Israeli-Lebanese border remains unchanged, and prevent aggression from any side."

Chirac spoke for the creation of a "sanitary line" in the region. "There has to be an international power between the conflicting sides - a line, to control and oversee. I have discussed the idea with the UN secretary general, and he is ready to support it," Chirac said.

Beirut's legitimate army should be deployed on the Israeli border, he noted.
