Alkhanov proposes extending amnesty to January 1, 2007

GROZNY. July 19 (Interfax-AVN) - Chechen President Alu Alkhanov proposed that the Russian government extend until January 1, 2007 the period when members of illegal armed formations can voluntarily lay down their arms and return to peaceful life.

Alkhanov's address to illegal armed formations published on Thursday says that he has asked the Russian leadership to introduce the initiative in the Federal Assembly.

He says it will give illegal armed formations "time to contemplate their decision and make use of a chance to become free and return to peaceful pursuits for the well-being of their motherland."
