Defense Minister to visit shipbuilding giant

SEVERODVINSK. July 20 (Interfax-AVN) - Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister of Russia Sergei Ivanov will visit the Zvezdochka shipbuilding plant in Severodvinsk on Thursday, the press service of the plant informs.

Ivanov will chair the meeting to discuss the implementation of the state defense order and the development of the defense industry.

Under visit's schedule the Defense Minister will see the workshops where ships are under construction for the navy, as well as other departments and sections of the enterprise in order to get to know how the work on defense order implementation is progressing. Ivanov will also visit the museum of the plant.

In addition to Zvezdochka's leaders, the meeting will see participation of heads of the Russian Navy and defense companies, including the Rubin central design bureau, the Almaz design bureau, the Malakhit specialized design bureau, the Arktika company, the BIUS company and the Severny Reid company.

Ivanov is visiting Severodvinsk-based Zvezdochka as the chairman of the Defense Industry Commission. It is his first visit to the plant.

Zvezdochka specializes in repairing and refurbishing submarines, surface ships and vessels of all types and classes, including for foreign operators. In recent years the plant has taken up building large vessels, fishing boats, and floating oil platforms operated in northern seas of Russia.
