Georgia enlists professional soldiers to the National Guard

TBILISI. July 20 (Interfax-AVN) - Georgia has begun calling up young men to its National Guard.

Akaky Bobokhidze, the commander of the National Guard at Georgia's Defense Ministry, told journalists Thursday that his office has dispatched special teams to all regions to urge young men to sign up for service in the National Guard.

"We are not contracting everybody, but only those who have served under compulsory military service, because we offer very good conditions, a minimum wages of 600 lari ($340), raises for the length of service, daily allowances, and some social benefits," he said.

The main mission of the National Guard is to mobilize reservists, and participate in dealing with the aftermath of natural and man-made disasters. In case of military actions, the National Guard will be actively involved.
