MOSCOW. Aug 1 (Interfax-AVN) - Tehran could use the resolution adopted earlier by the UN Security Council in order to reject the proposals made by the six mediators regarding its nuclear problem, a Russian analyst says.
"I think that resolution is taking the situation into a dead end," said Ivan Safranchuk, head of the Moscow Office of the Center for Defense Information.
"The world community thinks that this resolution will make Iran feel pressured and giddy. However, Iran can use this resolution to justify its rejection of the sextet proposals. Iran could claim that the sextet's proposals amount to an ultimatum," the expert said.
On Monday, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution concerning Iran, giving it a deadline of a month to stop its uranium enrichment efforts. If Iran disobeys, it could face economic sanctions under UN Charter Chapter 7, Article 41.
Safranchuk said the resolution was unjustified.
"It was worth waiting till August 22 when Tehran was to give an answer to the sextet's proposals. After this, in case of a negative answer, Iran would have been sanctioned or other measures of pressure could have been contemplated. But before obtaining an answer from Iran there was no need for this resolution," he said.
He said the UN Security Council's resolution "gives no green light for a military action."
