State Duma committee calls for ratification of base withdrawal agreement

MOSCOW. Oct 5 (Interfax-AVN) - The State Duma Defense Committee recommended the parliament to ratify the agreement between Russian and Georgia on withdrawal of Russian military bases and other military installations from the country in the South Caucasus.

"Despite the deterioration in the Russian-Georgian relations, the committee thinks that the State Duma should ratify the aforementioned agreement in order to show the rests of the international community that Russia sticks to international laws," Lieutenant General Alexei Sigutkin, deputy chairman of the committee, told Interfax-AVN.

He added that Russia has been consistent in its effort to organize the withdrawal of its forces from Georgia. "In fact, we have fulfilled out commitments in 2006 as planned," he said.

The agreement between Russia and Georgia on the terms, order and procedures of temporary deployment and subsequent withdrawal of military bases was signed on March 31, 2006. The ratification issue will be discussed by the State Duma on Friday.
