Georgia has very long way to go before joining NATO - official

MOSCOW. Oct 16 (Interfax-AVN) - The decision to admit Georgia or any other country into NATO will be taken at the political level, NATO Military Committee Chairman General Raymond Henault told Russia's Ekho Moskvy radio on Monday, adding that such decisions will not be simultaneous.

Any decision of this kind has to go through several levels and critical points, Henault said. Such decisions, which are made by all NATO member-nations at the political level, will primarily require Georgia to receive an invitation to join NATO and a certain accession action plan, he said.

Given the present situation, Georgia and the alliance are nowhere near such a point in their history, he added.

The decision on integration with NATO largely depends on the conduct of the country aspiring to become a member, the official said.

Traditionally, it takes a country a few years to meet all the necessary requirements for membership, Henault said.
