MOSCOW. Oct 18 (Interfax-AVN) - Law enforcement agencies have confiscated some 5,000 tonnes of drugs during the second stage of the Channel-2006 operation, with the participation of member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
"More than 4,700 tonnes of drugs were confiscated. More than 5,000 drug trafficking crimes were registered, while some 4,000 criminal cases were opened on charges of drug trafficking," a statement issued by the press service of the Russian Federal Drug Control Service and obtained by Interfax on Wednesday reads.
The second stage of the special operation was held on October 10-16, the document reads. The goal of the operation was to shut down the international routes used to deliver synthetic drugs from Europe and those used to deliver drugs from Afghanistan to the territories of the states participating in the operation.
The international coordination headquarters, consisting of representatives of the law enforcement agencies of Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, headed the operation, the press service said, adding that representatives of Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine and the United States monitored the operation.
