Georgian parliament refuses to recognize South Ossetian polls

TBILISI. Nov 13 (Interfax-AVN) - The legitimacy of the elections held in the Tskhinvali Region cannot be discussed before the Georgina-Ossetian conflict is settled, David Bakradze, the chairman of the Georgian Parliament's European Integration Committee, said.

"None of the alternative polls can be recognized as legitimate before a full-scale settlement of the conflict is attained. But the 'alternative' regional elections indicate that a very large part of the local population does not want to be run by the Kokoity regime or by Russia. These people want peace and aspire for talks with Georgia," he said.

In the future, international organizations will probably have to take "the legitimate interests of both supporters and opponents of the Kokoity regime, residing in South Ossetia" into account, Deputy David Berdzenishvili he said.

A leader of the parliamentary opposition Pikriya Chikhradze said, "two positions - pro-Russian and pro-Georgian - have formed in the Tskhinvali Region."

"Certain forces could attempt to polarize these two positions and provoke an escalation of the military conflict," Chikhradze said.
