Moscow, Minsk may sign air defense accord this month – general

MINSK. Nov 14 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia and Belarus may sign an agreement on the creation of a joint anti-missile defense system in November, Belarussian air force and air defense commander Lieutenant General Oleg Paferov said at a news conference in Minsk on Tuesday.

"The agreement is likely to be signed at a meeting of defense ministers of the CIS members states scheduled to take place in Brest in late November," the general said.

"Both Russia and Belarus have prepared almost all the documents," he said.

The signing of the agreement "will make issues of renewing arms and equipment redundant," the commander said.

"Involved coordinating talks are under way, and after the agreement is signed purchases will be made for the joint air defense system, rather than for Belarus," Paferov said.
