Prosecutors charge Ukrainian interior minister with corruption

KYIV. Nov 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Ukrainian prosecutors have uncovered evidence of corruption in Interior Minister Yury Lutsenko's actions, Deputy Prosecutor General Renat Kuzmin has said.

Signs of corruption were uncovered during an investigation into the murder of Colonel Roman Yerokhin of the anti-organized crime police department, Kuzmin said. "During the investigation into Yerokhin's murder, facts of corruption by the interior minister were uncovered," the TV channel 1+1 quoted Kuzmin as saying.

When investigating Yerokhin's murder, the prosecutors found "very serious facts of corruption in law enforcement agencies," and the investigation is expected to produce a "very interesting" result, Kuzmin said.

Asked to be more specific about Lutsenko's alleged corrupt actions, Kuzmin said the matter involves "unlawful promotion of police officers, unlawful issuance of combat handguns to individuals who have no right to carry weapons, and a lot of other" violations.
