Russia, Norway agree cooperation in radiation safety

MOSCOW. Dec 5 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency (Rosatom) and the Norwegian Foreign Ministry have signed a five-year agreement on cooperation in nuclear and radiation safety efforts, Rosatom said in a press release.

Russia and Norway have pledged to cooperate in measures aimed at disposing of Russian nuclear submarines, nuclear-powered surface ships and vessels servicing nuclear-powered ships. The two countries will also work together to handle radioactive wastes and spent nuclear fuel and to dispose of radioisotope thermoelectric generators installed at navigation lighthouses outside Murmansk, Arkhangelsk and in the Nenets autonomous district.

The Russian and Norwegian authorities agreed to establish a joint commission to coordinate projects and to oversee the implementation of the agreement, the press release says.
