Incumbent president wins easy victory in breakaway Transdniestria

TIRASPOL. Dec 11 (Interfax-AVN) - Leader of the breakaway republic of Transdniestria Igor Smirnov won a landslide victory in Sunday's presidential elections, the Central Elections Commission told Interfax on Monday.

Early reports indicate that he collected 82.4% of the vote.

Communist candidate Nadezhda Bondarenko got a little over 8%; editor-in-chief of the opposition Novaya Gazeta Andrei Safonov, around 4%; and member of the local parliament Pyotr Tomaily, a little over 2%.

Turnout was said to have stood at 65.4%.
