MOSCOW. Dec 11 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alekseyev has welcomed the understanding reached to resume six-nation talks on the Korean nuclear problem.
"Certain reassuring signs have appeared in the situation lately as a result of the persistent efforts made by Russia, among others. I am speaking primarily of the understanding on the resumption of the six-nation talks. This is especially important considering that the pause in the negotiating process has lasted for over a year," he said in an interview with Nezavisimaya Gazeta published on Monday.
He said Russia was interested in the speedy resumption of the dialogue.
"All of us need results modest as they may be," he said.
"Each party to the Beijing process has its own understanding of the situation, its own approaches to specific aspects of the nuclear settlement," Alekseyev said.
"We see it as a key task to look for political solutions acceptable for all parties working in the spirit of compromise and mutual concessions," he said.
"Russia supports a peaceful settlement of the nuclear problem of the Korean peninsula in the framework of six-nation talks. As far as we know the other countries involved - North Korea, China, South Korea and Japan - have a similar approach," the diplomat said.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry reported earlier on Monday that the six-party talks would resume in Beijing on December 18.
