Russian Armed Forces chief of staff has service term extended by three years

MOSCOW. Jan 9 (Interfax-AVN) - Army General Yury Baluyevsky, Russian Armed Forces chief of staff and deputy defense minister, has had his term of service extended, the Defense Ministry told Interfax-AVN.

"The Armed Forces chief of staff has had his term of service extended by three years," a Defense Ministry official said.

The official noted that on Tuesday Baluyevsky turned 60, the maximum age for military service. However, the government is entitled to extend the term of service, he said.

Baluyevsky has been chief of staff and deputy defense minister since August 2004.
