Secretary generals of CSTO, SCO discuss joint combating terrorism

MOSCOW. April 5 (Interfax-AVN) - The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) are going to fight terrorism jointly, Nikolai Bordyuzha, secretary general of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, said in Moscow on Thursday.

"The two organizations represent the unions of the same nations - in fact, the SCO is the CSTO plus China, which makes it possible to cooperate in combating terrorism," Bordyuzha said.

He recalled that a meeting of antiterrorism authorities of the CIS, SCO and CSTO was held in Moscow last year, during which agreements on cooperation were signed.

Bordyuzha noted that there is a vast plan of actions to counter political and religious extremism, and terrorist murders in Central Asia.

He added that during the meeting with his SCO counterpart Bolat Nurgaliyev the sides discussed preparations for the signing of a memorandum on cooperation between the two organizations.

"Nothing prevents us from signing a memorandum of cooperation. However, we are going to pass through the procedures of coordinating the text of the memorandum by the responsible authorities of the two," he said.

According to him, the signing is a technical matter now and is going to be completed soonest. The decision to sign the memorandum, he added, will be adopted at the level of foreign ministers of CSTO and SCO member-states.

Nurgaliyev said for his part that the signing of the memorandum on cooperation with the Collective Security Treaty Organization is a step forward for the SCO to expand its international contacts.
