Russia’s first peacekeeping brigade to take part in joint exercise with France

MOSCOW. April 13 (Interfax-AVN) - The 15th detached peacekeeping brigade of the Russian Land Forces will rehearse joint actions with French army units at the Normandy-Niemen 2007 command post exercise in France, Colonel Igor Konashenkov, aide to the Land Forces commander-in-chief, said on Friday.

"The first peacekeeping brigade in the Russian Armed Forces will take part in a Russian-French exercise called Normady-Niemen 2007, which will take place in the vicinity of Mourmelon from April 15 to 21, where actions during a peacekeeping operations will be rehearsed," Konashenkov told Interfax-AVN.

Participants in the exercise will use maps to rehearse joint actions of quick-response forces, comprising a Russian and a French brigades. "As to practical actions, the personnel of the 15th brigade and the 1st mechanized brigade of the French Armed Forces will operate in four stages, starting with troops relocation to an area of responsibility and finishing with the completion of the conflict's peaceful settlement and full withdrawal of troops," the official said.

According to him, Russian troops taking part in the exercise will be overseen by Lieutenant General Valery Yevnevich, Land Forces deputy commander-in-chief.
