Moscow opposes resolution approving Ahtisaari’s plan – Lavrov (Part 2)

BAKU. May 21 (Interfax-AVN) - Moscow opposes attempts to pass a resolution approving Ahtisaari's settlement plan at the United Nations' Security Council.

"We oppose a resolution that supports the Ahtisaari plan and cancels Resolution 1244, which has been proposed for discussion at the UN Security Council by some Western countries," the minister said at a briefing after talks with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mamedyarov on Monday in Baku.

"The main thing is that a unilateral decision on the status of the territory is not taken into account the situation when it is likely to create a precedent, which would echo in many parts of the world and contribute to further destabilization of the situation," the minister said.

"A solution to any conflict despite its nature and location can rest only on the consent of both parties," he said.

The issue of the Kosovo settlement was one of the topics on the agenda of talks between the Russian and Azeri foreign ministers, he said.
