Russian prosecutors expect UK to share case against Lugovoi

MOSCOW. May 23 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian prosecution authorities are expecting London to provide it with documents upholding the charges brought against Russian citizen Andrei Lugovoi, Deputy Prosecutor General Sabir Kekhlerov told Interfax-AVN on Wednesday.

Commenting on the British request that Lugovoi be extradited to face charges of poisoning former FSB operative Alexander Litvinenko in the United Kingdom, Kekhlerov pointed out that the Russian constitution prohibits the extradition of Russian citizens to other countries.

"The United Kingdom has the right to send all the documents to us, if it sees this fit or if it believes the guilt of our citizen is proven," Kekhlerov said.

The Prosecutor General's Office is conducting its own investigation into Litvinenko's death and may open a case against Lugovoi on its own, Kekhlerov said.

"If the prosecution authorities find reasonable grounds for this and if we view the grounds provided to us by the British side as reasonable, we will make an appropriate judgment about them," Kekhlerov said.
