Ganci airbase agreements are hard to terminate – Atambayev (Part 2)

BISHKEK. May 24 (Interfax-AVN) - It is next to impossible to terminate an agreement on the deployment of the Ganci airbase of the antiterrorist coalition in Kyrgyzstan, Kyrgyz Prime Minister Almaz Atambayev said.

"This is a very tricky agreement and it is next to impossible to terminate it," he told journalists on Thursday in comments on the parliament's defense and security committee to put the issue of denouncing the agreement with the U.S. on the deployment of the Ganci airbase before parliament.

The antiterrorist airbase was deployed in Kyrgyzstan in 2001 and is used to assist antiterrorist operation in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, former Deputy Assistant Secretary Ronald E. Neumann said that the withdrawal of the Ganci base from Kyrgyzstan may influence the level of cooperation between the country and the United States.

If the U.S. airbase is withdrawn from Kyrgyz territory, the country will give grounds for the development of radicalism and drug trafficking in the Central Asian region, he said.

The cooperation that exists today between Kyrgyzstan and U.S. may decrease, Neumann told local media organizations on Wednesday commenting on results of meetings at the Kyrgyz Security Council and the Kyrgyz Defense Ministry.

Kyrgyzstan contributes greatly to the fight of the international community with active armed groups in Afghanistan, which is still been under way, he said.
