Russia against setting deadlines for determining Kosovo status

MOSCOW. Sept 14 (Interfax-AVN) - Any deadlines in determining the Kosovo status would be unacceptable, according to Moscow.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov held consultations with Serbian Minister for Kosovo-Metohija Slobodan Samardzic in Moscow on Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"It was particularly noted that setting any deadlines in the status process is unacceptable, that it must remain under control of the United Nations Security Council which is supposed to make a final decision on Kosovo status that is acceptable to both parties," the document says.

During the consultations "the sides found statements which pre-determine an outcome of the talks incompatible with the goals of a dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina," the ministry said.

"The parties emphasized that a status resolution will serve as precedent for other separatist conflicts and the possible dangers, should Pristina unilaterally pronounce its independence," the statement said.

Russia expressed its intention to continue playing an active role in the settlement process and facilitate its progress in line with international law, and in the framework of the Trio of international mediators and the Kosovo Contact Group, the document said.

Serbia, for its part, confirmed its willingness to actively participate in the talks with Pristina held with mediation of the Trio - Russia, the European Union and the Unites States, and to search for a compromise solution on the status of the region on basis of the UN SC resolution 1244.
