Russian bombers on new flying mission in Arctic

MOSCOW. Sept 14 (Interfax-AVN) - A pair of Russia's Tu-160 strategic missile carriers are patrolling an area over the neutral waters of the Arctic Ocean on Friday.

"Two Tu-160 strategic missile carriers took off from the airbase in Engels at four a.m. this morning. Currently, Russian strategists are practicing concerted operations during flights in northern latitudes, and a number of other tasks," Assistant to the Russian Air Force Commander, Col. Alexander Drobyshevsky told Interfax-AVN on Friday.

Flights will take place over neutral waters of the Arctic Ocean, he said.

The bombers are scheduled to return to their base airfield later today. The average flight length for both Tu-160s will be around 15 hours, the Air Force official said.
