Discussion of frozen conflicts in UN will not promote settlements – Yerevan

YEREVAN. Sept 14 (Interfax-AVN) - Armenia is opposed to the GUAM (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova) initiative to discuss frozen conflicts in the UN General Assembly.

"The discussion of frozen conflicts, in particular the Nagorno-Karabakh one, in another format will not contribute to the settlement," Armenian Presidential Press Secretary Viktor Sogomian told a news conference on Friday.

"The OSCE Minsk Group is the best format for Nagorno-Karabakh settlement talks," he said.

There are four frozen conflicts in CIS territory: Georgian-Abkhaz, Georgian-South Ossetian, Transdniestrian and Nagorno-Karabakh.

Abkhazia, South Ossetia (Georgia), Transdniestria (Moldova) and Nagorno-Karabakh (Azerbaijan) broke away following the dissolution of the USSR. They have been seeking international recognition ever since.
