TBILISI. Oct 5 (Interfax-AVN) - No country is able to influence Georgian-NATO relations, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said.
"No country can veto Georgia's aspiration to join NATO and thus to hinder such an aspiration," the NATO secretary general said.
"As for Georgia's accession to NATO, all of its 26 member states members states should make a decision but Georgia should comply with a lot of very high standards," Scheffer said.
Asked whether a country with two unresolved domestic conflicts could become a NATO member , Scheffer said that "NATO member states will make a political decision and no one will be able to influence it."
Meanwhile, commenting on a recent statement made by the French defense minister that Paris will oppose Georgia's entry to NATO if Moscow does so, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said that he met several day ago with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Marcel and the French president assured him that "France's position on Georgia, including on its NATO aspirations, is quite positive."
