TBILISI. Oct 9 (Interfax-AVN) - Former Georgian defense minister Irakly Okruashvili was released from a Tbilisi prison Monday night on bail in the amount of 10 million lari (about $6 million).
The police took him home, an Interfax-AVN correspondent reports. Okruashvili refused to say anything to the press.
Meanwhile, his lawyer Givi Papuashvili announced that he had sold and pawned all his property and real estate to bail out Okruashvili.
He said that on Monday Okruashvili underwent a medial examination in the presence of a representative of the Georgian ombudsman that did not show any presence of narcotics in his blood.
"Opposition figures were claiming that Okruashvili had changed his evidence under the influence of drugs but the examination ruled that out," the lawyer said.
On September 25 on a show of Imedi TV channel Orkuashvili accused President Mikheil Saakashvili of attempting to eliminate business tycoon Badri Patarkatsishvili and giving instructions to Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili to punish opposition deputy Valery Gelashvili who had criticized the president.
On September 27 Okruashvili was detained on charges of corruption. Deputy Prosecutor General Nika Gvaramia said that Okruashvili had been exposed of numerous instances of corruption.
On October 8 Gvaramia said that Okruashvili could be released from custody on bail of 10 million lari. He said that when Okruashvili was interrogated on October 7 he had pleaded guilty on two points - the extortion of a large-scale bribe and negligence. He also said Okruashvili admitted that his accusations concerning Saakashvili had been untrue.
