Georgia provides details of Sept operation in Kodori Gorge

TBILISI. Oct 11 (Interfax-AVN) - The Georgian Interior Ministry has provided details of its late September operation against Abkhaz servicemen in the Kodori Gorge.

"A group of ten saboteurs was traced near the unfinished strategic road in Upper Abkhazia shortly before an inspection trip of Georgian President [Mikheil Saakashvili], and it was decided to neutralize it," the ministry said.

The ministry said its officers seized armaments from the saboteurs and gave the names of the detainees.

"An investigation showed that the detainees work for the Abkhaz security service. They were sent to reconnoiter the unfinished road and commit an act of sabotage," the ministry said.

The detainees were charged with illegal weapons possession and attempted murder.

According to Tbilisi, Abkhazia tried to thwart the road project and thus committed an act of sabotage on September 20. Two Abkhaz were killed, two were injured, and seven were seized in the clash. The detainees are in two-month custody pending trial at the Rustavi prison.

According to Sukhumi, a group of Georgian saboteurs attacked a camp of Abkhaz border guards on September 20. The Foreign Ministry of the unrecognized republic insists on the release of the seven border guards.
