Militants could break through Russian border from Georgia – border service

MOSCOW. Nov 29 (Interfax-AVN) - There is still a threat that militants will break through the Russian border from the Georgian territory, deputy head of the Russian border guard service at the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Lieut. Gen. Nikolai Rybalkin said.

"We assume that there is still a threat," Rybalkin told journalists in Moscow on Thursday.

Given this information, Russia has been taking measures to strengthen border security "with a certain reserve," he said.

Adding that Russia has strengthened its North Caucasian border.

"Russian border guards have detained more than 2,000 trespassers in the North Caucasus over the past three years. There have been attempts at armed penetrations through the North Caucasus border this year as well. All of the attempts have failed," Rybalkin said.

Russian and Georgian border guards cooperate in the area of joint border protection, he said, adding that over 100 new border guard facilities have been constructed in the North Caucasus.
