Militant who took part in 1996 attack on Grozny held in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG. Nov 29 (Interfax-AVN) - Police have detained Aslambek Kuchushev (Temirbulatov), a native of Grozny, who was a member of illegal armed groups during the first Chechen war in St. Petersburg.

Kuchushev was apprehended on November 21 within the framework of a criminal case opened in 1999, the press service of the main department of the Russian Interior Ministry in the Northwestern Federal District said in a statement.

"Kuchushev shot dead an individual with an assault rifle in Grozny in October 1999. He then fled. He arrived in St. Petersburg in 2003 and changed his last name," the statement says.

According to the investigation, Kuchushev was a member of an illegal armed group led by Israpilov and took part in an August 1996 attack on Grozny. He participated in combat actions against federal forces near Minutka square.

Kuchushev was arrested and taken to Grozny.
