MOSCOW. Feb 22 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian envoy to NATO Dmitri Rogozin finds it unlikely that Ukraine or Georgia would join the alliance in the foreseeable future.
"I don't believe very much that Ukraine or Georgia would join NATO in the nearest future. This is pure political PR," he said during a TV linkup from Brussels on Friday.
Rogozin said Georgia does not meet the standards for NATO candidates at all, as it is not economically independent and there are unresolved conflicts on its territory.
Rogozin said that in Ukraine the public is so divided that accession to NATO could threaten its sovereignty and integrity.
However, he did not rule out the possibility that some politicians may inflate the issue of admission of the two countries to NATO, say, ahead of the presidential elections in the United States.
"I am not ruling out the possibility that in the context of American elections someone may toy with the idea of promoting the admission of Ukraine and Georgia to NATO and thus annoying Russia. That would be unbecoming and unwise. And it would not lead to anything good," Rogozin said.
