Bill on radioactive waste disposal may soon be presented to Russian govt

MOSCOW. April 10 (Interfax) - A bill on radioactive waste disposal may soon be presented to the government, head of the Rosatom's department for public relations and regions Igor Konyshev told Interfax.

He said the bill was discussed at the Thursday meeting of the Rosatom Public Council and gained unanimous support.

"We will soon present the bill to the federal government and regions and organize public debate," he said.

Meanwhile, first deputy head of Gidrospetsgeologia Mark Glinsky presented results of the soil monitoring in the Mayak chemical plant's area. That's the best-studied area in Russia, Konyshev said. The plant has been dumping radioactive waste into the Techa cascade for years, and plenty of low-lying active waste is still there. "It is important to know where the waste goes," Konyshev said.

More than 400 wells were drilled in the course of monitoring, Konyshev said. "In the opinion of experts, there is no danger. They did not find any underground migration [of the low-lying active waste from the cascade]," he said.
