Georgia demands UN SC meeting to discuss Russia’s policy toward Abkhazia, S. Ossetia

TBILISI. April 17 (Interfax-AVN) - Georgia demands an immediate meeting of the United Nations Security Council after Russia made steps towards "the actual annexation of the Georgian territory," Georgian Foreign Minister David Bakradze said at a government session on Thursday.

"The reply to our request will be known tonight. We have also asked the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) that its Permanent Council hold a meeting on this issue," Bakradze said.

Georgia has also demanded that Russia's actions be discussed at the NATO-Russia Council special meeting, he added.

It was reported earlier that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered to the Russian government to provide substantial support to the population of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the implementation of the president's policy will help create mechanisms that ensure full protection of the rights, freedoms and lawful interests of the Russian citizens living in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
