Sorting out mess at Vostok battalion a timely, necessary measure – Chechen MP

GROZNY. April 21 (Interfax-AVN) - The measures taken in Gudermess in order to due with the situation surrounding the Vostok Battalion are timely and in line with the need to respect the civil rights, the law and the Constitution, Speaker of the Chechen Parliament Dusuvakha Abdurakhmanov said on local television on Saturday.

"Drastic changes have occurred in Chechnya, we are no longer at war, we have eliminated terrorists from 50 countries who flooded our republic. Our people were finally able to sigh with relief, but those who were supposed to provide security were the ones who broke it. The actions of some of the battalion members are illegal and cannot be tolerated any longer," he said.

"The republic has its leader - president Ramzan Kadyrov, who has changed Chechnya, and it is difficult to explain to people why the army still grossly violates their rights," Abdurakhmanov said.

"The measures that have been adopted were backed by both parliamentary houses, as well as political and public organizations," he said.

"There is too much noise in the press around this issue, whereas the real situation has not got any worse either in Gudermess or elsewhere in Chechnya. Houses are being built at a fast rate, measures are being taken to make those who are not allowed by law to armed give up their weapons," he said.

"Badrudi Yamadayev who was sentenced to a long term in prison must return to prison, and Sulim [Yamadayev, Vostok Battalion Commander] must sort out the mess within the battalion. If he fails to do so, he should resign and let others do this," Abdurakhmanov said.
