Ukrainian army ready for NATO – General Staff

KYIV. April 21 (Interfax) - The Ukrainian Armed Forces can be useful to NATO, head of the Ukrainian General Staff's Euro-Atlantic integration department Borys Kremenetsky said at a roundtable in Kyiv on Monday. The roundtable was about the readiness of the Ukrainian army for accession to NATO.

Alliance member countries have agreed on 12,000 standards, Kremenetsky said. The Ukrainian army is seriously studying these standards, he added. "If we analyze the condition of the armed forces of Ukraine and NATO member countries, I can tell you that the Ukrainian army is trained no worse or, in certain aspects, better than they are," he said.

For instance, the Ukrainian army could make a large contribution to military cargo traffic, engineering and medical support. Ukraine has powerful military units, as well, he said.

"We have enough capacities to be a NATO member," Kremenetsky said.

"Ukraine is the only partner of the alliance that takes part in every NATO operation, including Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq and the Operation Active Endeavor in the Mediterranean," he said.

The Ukrainian army is also taking part in eleven international operations in nine states under the UN aegis, Kremenetsky added.
