Militant suspected of crimes during first Chechen war detained

GROZNY. April 25 (Interfax-AVN) - Law enforcement officers have detained a militant and an accomplice of militants, while another accomplice of militants has surrendered in Chechnya.

"A local resident who was a member of an illegal armed group during the first Chechen war was detained in the village of Dochu-Borzoi in the Grozny district. His involvement in serious and very serious crimes is being checked," spokesman for the Chechen Interior Ministry Magomed Deniyev told Interfax.

A local resident aged 35, who actively assisted members of illegal armed groups and provided shelter to them from May 2004 throughout July 2004, surrendered in the Urus-Martan district, the spokesman said.

An accomplice of militants who helped provide food in 2001 has been detained in the village of Gukhoi in the Itumkala district, he said, adding that the man did not take part in military actions.

In addition, a cache with arms and ammunition has been found in the Oktyabrsky district of Grozny.
