Russian Baltic Fleet carries out amphibious landing exercise

KALININGRAD, Russia. April 28 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia's Baltic Fleet carried out a successful exercise training for an amphibious landing operation on the Baltic coast on Friday, the fleet said.

The site was the Khmelyovka training ground near Baltiisk, a port in Kaliningrad region, a fleet spokesman told Interfax.

Various ships, several dozen armored amphibious vehicles and more than 200 marines were involved.

There was an unusual aspect to the exercise, the spokesman said. "The reason is that, as part of training future Kaliningrad draftees for service in the army or navy, the Baltic Fleet command and the Kaliningrad administration had brought to the coast 1,500 youths who were to watch an exercise of this kind for the first time," he said.
