Moscow to inform partners of its position on nonproliferation treaty – deputy PM

MOSCOW. May 28 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia is using a review conference on the application of the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons to explain its position to its foreign partners, Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said.

"Virtually all major players in the international arena have their positions on these issues. Reaching complete consensus is a pretty difficult thing. Therefore, we must use the upcoming conference to explain our position and our approaches for the strengthening of the Nonproliferation Treaty to our partners," Ivanov told the government commission for export control in Moscow.

The commission is to discuss preparations for the review conference on the Nonproliferation Treaty, and to decide on further aspects of the G8's Global Partnership against weapons and materials of mass destruction, Ivanov said.

Concerning global partnership, this initiative gives priority to the most pressing projects, defined by the government and related to chemical weapons disposal and the complex disposal of decommissioned submarines, said Ivanov.
