MOSCOW. May 28 (Interfax-AVN) - In reporting the conclusions of its probe into an April 20 incident in which a Georgian unmanned aircraft was shot down over Georgia's breakaway Abkhazia region, the UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) failed to disclose "the ultimate cause of the problem," Moscow said.
"It is important that UNOMIG should continue to investigate the ultimate cause of the problem," Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a commentary posted on its website.
UNOMIG said the unmanned reconnaissance plane had been shot down by a Russian fighter aircraft.
"The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that was shot down on April 20 has been identified as a Hermes 450 aerial vehicle that belonged to Georgia," the Russian ministry said.
"It is its flight that became the ultimate cause of the incident. Unfortunately, the Georgian side has not only failed to stop the provocative flights of its drones after the incident but has been increasing them up in number," it said.
"Currently such violations are not one-offs but systematic events, fanning tension in the conflict zone even more," the commentary said.
"According to information from Sukhumi, the Abkhaz air defenses have already shot down seven reconnaissance aircraft of this kind, but the UNOMIG report admits only three of them to have been Israeli-manufactured Georgian UAVs. We expect that the Abkhaz side possesses evidence and would be able to show fragments of other UAVs that have been shot down," it said.
