Medvedev warns Saakashvili against resolving Abkhaz problem by joining NATO

ST. PETERSBURG. June 6 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili against attempting to resolve the conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia by joining NATO, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday.

"We have stressed again that Georgia would not be able to achieve this by artificially pulling itself into NATO because this would lead to another stage of confrontation," Lavrov said.

It is necessary to settle conflicts stage by stage, he said.

"We have not violated any international agreements on Abkhazia and South Ossetia that have been struck with Georgian participation," he said.
