Georgia blames Russia for opening “illegal military base” in Abkhazia

TBILISI. June 16 (Interfax-AVN) - Georgia has blamed Russia for opening one more military base in Abkhazia without its consent.

The base is in the village of Agubedia in Abkhazia's Ochamchira district, Tornike Kilanava, spokesman for the government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, which Georgia recognizes, told Georgian journalists.

Military hardware, including tanks and howitzers, arrived at the base on Sunday. Air defense systems were also installed, he said.

"Such weapons are banned in the conflict zone, because they have the status of attack, not defense systems," Kilanava said.

The Agubedia base, earlier called a training center, is located in a strategic area, where the entry into and exit from the lower and upper parts of Abkhazia's Gali district bordering on Georgia, can be controlled, he said.
