Russia to deploy 8 new peacekeeping outposts in buffer zone in Georgia

MOSCOW. Aug 20 (Interfax-AVN) - The peacekeeping mandate held by Russia envisions the establishment of eight new outposts in the buffer zone in Georgia, 40 kilometers from Gori, said Col. Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, a deputy chief of staff of the Russian armed forces.

"They are envisioned by the mandate - this zone has been set up specifically for performing peacekeeping functions," Nogovitsyn said at a news briefing in Moscow on Wednesday.

The buffer zone is 40 kilometers from Gori, he said.

Documents envisioning this format of the peacekeepers' deployment were signed earlier by Georgia, he said.
