TIRASPOL. Sept 1 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia's recognition of the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia will influence the Moldovan-Transndiestria settlement, said leader of the self-proclaimed republic of Transdniestria, Igor Smirnov.
"This year has become a turning point not only because the Russian Federation recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia but because the whole world has seen the harmfulness of the U.S. efforts to strengthen a unipolar world. The way to resolve the Moldovan-Transndiestria conflict lies through the recognition of Transdniestria by Moldova. There is no other way. There has been talk of a Moldovan plan. But neither we, nor Russia have seen it," Smirnov said at a press conference ahead of the republic day marked on September 2.
He reminded journalists that the people of Transdniestria have expressed their opinion about the future of the republic already.
"A national referendum was held two years ago in which the people voted for the independence of Transndiestria and the subsequent accession to Russia. For us the referendum is the supreme law," Smirnov said.
