Tanks counter landing party in exercise on Sakhalin

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK. Sept 19 (Interfax-AVN) - A five-day exercise, which included combat firing training of a tank battalion, ended on the Sakhalin island on Friday.

"The exercise took place on a firing range near the village of Uspenskoye on the shore of the Aniva Bay. The goal of the exercise is to repel an attack of an [imaginary] enemy that lands on the Sakhalin coast," aide to commander of an infantry division Igor Chorba said.

Over 50 units of land equipment and a combat helicopter were involved in the exercise, he said.

Tanks successfully repelled an enemy sea attack with air support. The infantry division deputy commander Col. Alexander Glazkov commanded the exercise. "The exercise was successful. The tasks were fulfilled. The battalion showed high professionalism and training, as well as good handling of military equipment," he said.
