Abkhazia, S-Ossetia unlikely to be adopted into CoE – general secretary

MOSCOW. Sept 19 (Interfax-AVN) - Council of Europe General Secretary Terry Davis said he thinks that Abkhazia and South Ossetia are unlikely to be adopted into the CoE.

Russia is the only CoE member that recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Davis said on the Ekho Moskvy radio station.

The secretary general said he thinks that it will be very difficult to support the entry of these territories into the CoE, because everybody, except Russia, considers them as parts of Georgia.

Speaking about the procedure of adopting new members into the CoE, Davis said that a state should send an application to the secretary general, who then forwards it to the Committee of the CoE Foreign Ministers and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), noting that this is a lengthy process.
